Tyler West Vandehei, 32, Killed in Sac. Hit-and-Run

Pedestrian struck and killed by hit-and-run driver on Old Highway 18 in Apple Valley.

Sacramento, CA (June 18, 2024) A young man lost his life when a driver hit him while he was on foot. The driver fled the scene, leaving Tyler West Vandehei, a 32-year-old man, lying on the street in critical condition.

Tyler West Vandehei was walking near 16th street at one in the morning when he was struck by the vehicle. Witnesses were able to call authorities, who rushed to the scene. They found Mr. Vandehei seriously injured, and paramedics rushed him to the U.C. Davis Medical Center. Police called his parents, who live in Washington, at about 3:30 a.m. They told them to come to California immediately, as their son was likely going to pass away.

“Its going to be fatal,” said Erik Spence, Vandehei’s stepfather. “He has a skull fracture and abrasions all over his body. The doctors said his prognosis isn’t good.”

Tragically, Erik Spence was correct. Vandehei stayed in the hospital on life support for just a couple of days before succumbing to his injuries.

Vandehei’s mother, Deborah West, told news outlets, “I’m heartbroken. He wasn’t just someone who got hit by a car. He’s my son. He’s a brother. He’s a grandson.”

Several hours after the initial hit-and-run, police were able to locate and arrest the driver. Tyler West Vandehei’s family has set up a GoFundMe for his funeral expenses.
