Merced County, CA (October 31, 2024) Just before 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30th, a head-on collision occurred on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Merced County. It wasn’t far from Highway 152, near Los Banos, according to reports. Two people lost their lives in this traumatic collision.
Vehicles headed along Interstate 5 in Merced County early on Wednesday morning, October 30th. A box truck was heading south, headlights illuminating the way on that early morning drive. Suddenly, the driver noticed headlights drift into his lane, as a northbound vehicle swerved over the center median. There was no time to react and the box truck and the other vehicles collided, head-on, in the southbound lanes of the freeway.
Emergency personnel arrived and found a box truck and a Honda, both severely damaged, blocking the roadway. Following the collision, both vehicles caught fire. Firefighters arrived at the scene and quickly extinguished the flames. Officers hurried to the vehicles, knowing people were inside. They found two people inside the vehicles who had been killed, according to reports. With heavy hearts, authorities pronounced them both dead at the scene.
The accident is being investigated in an attempt to piece together what happened on that stretch of freeway in Merced County. It took crews several hours to clean up the scene following the initial investigation, officers reported.
