Carlsbad, CA (October 26, 2023) 44-year-old Andrew David Shaw was arrested for driving under the influence following a collision on Sunday, October 22nd, that killed on person and seriously injured another. The California Highway Patrol said the collision occurred around 10:00 p.m. on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad.
Andrew David Shaw, an Escondido resident, was driving south on Interstate 5 in a Ford Raptor pickup truck when he rear-ended a Nissan Altima sedan. It happened on the southbound side of the interstate near Cannon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 31-year-old passenger in the car and the 53-year-old driver were both seriously injured in the collision. Paramedics arrived at the scene to assist anyone who was injured. California Highway Patrol Public-Affairs Officer Hunter Gerber said both women were taken to a local trauma center, via ambulance, to receive treatment for injuries they sustained during the crash. The 53-year-old driver was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
An ambulance also took Shaw to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries he received in the collision. On the morning of Monday, October 23rd, Shaw was arrested for suspicion of DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter, resisting arrest, and first-degree homicide, according to Officer Gerber.
Shaw was booked into the county jail in Vista without bail.
