Chula Vista, CA (April 10, 2024) Two people lost their lives on Wednesday morning, April 10th, in a wrong-way collision in Chula Vista. 16-year-old Ryder Shoup and 67-year-old Eileen Crawford both sustained fatal injuries in this devastating collision. The fatal crash occurred on Interstate 5 in the southbound lanes in the South Bay area. The California Highway Patrol said they received numerous calls about a vehicle driving the wrong way before the collision happened.
Interstate 5 in Chula Vista was covered in darkness just after 3:00 a.m. as vehicles traveled to and from destinations. The California Highway Patrol said they began receiving calls about a vehicle driving the wrong way on the interstate at a high speed. The vehicle was described by callers as a red Honda Civic, authorities reported. At approximately, 3:20 a.m., the Honda, driven by Crawford, slammed into a dark-colored sports car, driven by Shoup, near Palomar Street. The Honda was approaching the sports car at such a high speed that the driver had no time to react. The force of the collision was so strong that both vehicles sustained major damage. Suddenly, the sports car burst into flames, according to witnesses.
The California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene with paramedics and the fire department. Firefighters rushed to put out to the fire as paramedics checked the Honda for anyone with injuries. Officers worked to close off the scene and divert drivers to L Street. Paramedics found the driver of the Honda, Crawford, had been killed in the collision. Shoup was in the sports car and did not survive the collision, either. Sadly, both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers investigated the scene before calling tow trucks to come and remove the two severely damaged vehicles from the scene. Glass, debris and even liquid from the vehicles had to be removed from the interstate. Officers are determined to figure out why Crawford was driving the wrong way at a high rate of speed.
