Malibu, CA (May 15, 2024) A tragic two-vehicle collision took place on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu on Tuesday afternoon, claiming one person’s life. Tragically, 60-year-old Derek Schimming did not survive this collision. It was minutes before 1:00 p.m. when the two vehicles collided near Winding Way and to the east of the Paradise Cove area, according to reports. The fatal accident took place right at the entrance to the Escondido Falls parking lot.
A gray Honda Civic and a white van were driving along the Pacific Coast Highway (State Route 1), along with other vehicles, on Tuesday afternoon, May 14th. For reasons still unknown, the two vehicles collided while driving on the highway. The Honda came to a stop in the middle of the highway with major front-end damage, following the collision. The white van stopped on the side of the road. It also had damage from the collision and both vehicles were surrounded by debris, according to reports.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene along with the California Highway Patrol. They found the Honda with serious damage sitting in the middle of the highway. They hurried to the vehicle, knowing that if anyone had survived, they would be injured. Some good Samaritans at the scene pulled the woman from the vehicle, reports indicated. Sadly, officers found the driver of the Honda. identified as Schimming, unresponsive. With heavy hearts, they pronounced the Derek Schimming dead at the scene, covered her body with a tarp and waited for the coroner to arrive.
Officers issued a SigAlert for the highway because both lanes were blocked by the damaged vehicles. There is no word as to whether or not the driver of the van was injured in this fatal accident. Investigators gathered evidences and took statements from witnesses at the scene. They are determined to decipher what happened on the Pacific Coast Highway that afternoon. They are also hoping to determine who was at fault for this fatal Malibu collision.
