Fountain Valley, CA (May 22, 2024) The community of Fountain Valley is mourning the loss of a bicyclist who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run. Antonio Huerta, 52, was riding a bicycle with he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run vehicle just after 7:00 a.m. The fatal accident occurred at Santa Maria Street and Slater Avenue on Sunday, May 12th, according to the Fountain Valley Police Department.
It was early morning in Fountain Valley as Huerta went for a bike ride. As he rode in the bike lane, a vehicle approached him from behind. For reasons unknown, the vehicle drifted into the bike lane and hit Huerta. The driver of the vehicle didn’t stop to call for help, but instead, hit the gas and fled the scene, leaving Huerta alone with life-threatening injuries.

The Fountain Valley Police Department arrived at the scene and found Huerta on the ground, his bicycle dented and damaged, laid a few feet from him. Officers hurried to give medical aid to Huerta, and found him with life-threatening injuries. Paramedics loaded Huerta into an ambulance and rushed him to a nearby hospital to receive further treatment. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The investigation is being headed by the Fountain Valley Police Department and they are asking for anyone with information to call the FVPD Traffic Bureau at 714-593-4481. Officers gathered as much evidence as they could find and the smashed bicycle was removed from the scene as a sad heap of metal and tires.
