Sparks, NV (June 7, 2024) The community of Sparks awoke to tragic news on Wednesday morning, June 5th. A wrong-way, head-on collision left one person dead. The tragic accident occurred on Sparks Boulevard just before 8:00 a.m.
Two vehicles were driving on Sparks Boulevard, one heading south and the other heading north, officers reported. Suddenly, in the 500 block, the southbound vehicle began to drift. It went over the center median and veered into the northbound lane, into oncoming traffic. The northbound vehicle had no time to react and the two collided.
The Sparks Fire and REMSA, as well as the Sparks Police Department, arrived at the scene and found the two vehicles with major front-end damage. Glass and debris were everywhere. Officers had to block the northbound lanes of traffic and direct motorists away from the scene.
Paramedics rushed to the vehicles. They found both occupants trapped inside their cars with serious injuries. Firefighters used special tools to free the two drivers from the wreckage. They were both rushed to a local hospital, via ambulance, to receive treatment for serious injuries. Tragically, one of the drivers, Eric “Rick” Heaney of Reno, succumbed to his injuries at 79 years old.
Police officers took statements from witnesses and gathered evidence from the scene. They are determined to learn what happened on Sparks Boulevard that morning that caused the driver to drift into oncoming traffic and hit Mr. Heaney’s car.
