Oroville, CA (June 11, 2024) The Butte County Coroner has reported the names of two people who tragically died after being rear-ended by a pickup truck on Highway 70.
Both cars involved were heading north near Montgomery Street around 12:00 p.m. last week. The two deceased victims were riding in a white Volkswagen CC when, for unknown reasons, their vehicle stopped. The driver, Beatrice Higgins (62) and the passenger, James Moore Jr. (58), were rear-ended soon afterward.
The vehicle that hit them was a Ram pickup truck driven by Oroville resident Elijah Kinser. CHP said that Kinser was driving at a stated speed of 65 MPH, and did not realize the Volkswagen ahead of him had stopped.
Kinser sustained minor injuries, and the two people in the Volkswagen were found dead at the scene, CHP says. Devastating footage of the incident shows the car absolutely crushed, with the rear headlights, the rear doors, and the trunk completely smashed in. It is clear that the impact was extremely intense.
