Acton, CA (June 24, 2024) 22-year-old Hector Aranda was killed by a 17-year-old driver who fled the scene in Acton. The tragic accident took place around 1:20 a.m. on the 14 Freeway, according to reports. Aranda was standing on the shoulder of the highway with a tow truck driver after having vehicle issues, officer said. The 17-year-old struck the disabled vehicle, which hit the two pedestrians.

It was the middle of the night in Acton as Hector Aranda was driving a Honda Pilot SUV on the 14 Freeway. Sometime after midnight, south of Red Rover Mine Road, his vehicle died. Aranda managed to pull onto the right shoulder of the freeway and called for a tow truck. He waited, in the dark, until the tow truck pulled over onto the shoulder in front of him. Aranda got out of his disabled vehicle to speak with the tow-truck driver. They were both standing on the shoulder, between the tow truck and the Honda at 1:20 a.m. As they stood, a Nissan Altima veered out of the far right lane and hit the disabled Honda. The force from the collision pushed the Honda forward, hitting both the tow truck driver and Aranda.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as a 17-year-old boy, panicked and got out of his car. He then took off on foot, fleeing the scene, officers said.

The California Highway Patrol was the first to arrive at the scene and found the two men on the ground. 22-year-old Hector Aranda had sustained life-threatening injuries. Officers called for an ambulance to come to the scene to take both men to a nearby hospital. Paramedics arrived at the scene and quickly began life-saving measures, but it wasn’t enough to save the victim’s life. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers investigated the scene and were able to gather information on the driver of the Nissan that was left at the scene. They discovered that the driver was a 17-year-old and they later found him at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. As of now, no charges have been announced and officials are continuing this investigation, according to reports.
