Stuck in Vegas: Brad Bognar Critically Hurt in DUI Crash

Las Vegas, NV (July 3, 2024)

Just a couple weeks ago, a trip to Las Vegas turned into a nightmare for a young married couple from Cincinnati, Ohio.

At about 12:45 a.m. on June 16, a man named Brad Bognar was riding in a taxi with his friend, Andrew, in Las Vegas when a car slammed them just outside of the New York New York hotel. Ellie, his wife, told WCPO Cincinnati that officials believe the driver who hit the taxi was under the influence of alcohol.

The impact caused the taxi to fly 56 feet away and slam into a third vehicle, according to a statement written by Brad’s sister on a webpage set up for him on Caring Bridge.

Brad was rushed to the Las Vegas University Hospital Trauma ICU with critical injuries, and he has remained there ever since. He was unresponsive and placed on a ventilator at first, but in the weeks that have followed, he has improved a bit. Ellie said he can wake up, identify folks in photos, and respond to commands. Still, his condition is serious; He reportedly suffered a cervical spine fracture, multiple brain bleeds, a diffuse axonal TBI, and several more injuries. It’s unclear if Andrew or anyone else involved in the collision was hurt, but reportedly, Brad was the most seriously impacted victim.

It’s difficult for them to be so far from Ohio as Mr. Bognar goes through his recovery, which might take years. Apparently, a medically-assisted flight to their home in Norwood could cost up to $100,000. Ellie and Brad’s family have started a GoFundMe to help raise the money needed for the couple to go home so he can recover in a familiar place. Today, Ellie shared an update that she thinks they will be able to head home this Friday.
