Montecito, CA (July 12, 2024) The community of Montecito is saddened, following news of a young life that was taken on Highway 101. 19-year-old Diego Lake Nieves, from Carpinteria, sustained life threatening injuries while riding his motorcycle on July 3rd. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on July 4th, 2024 at a hospital.
On July 3rd, 2024, Nieves was riding his motorcycle north on Highway 101, near the San Ysidro off-ramp, according to reports. For reasons that are still unknown, the young man collided with two other vehicles and went down in the northbound lanes of the highway in Montecito. When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, Nieves was still alive and paramedics rushed the young motorcyclist to a local hospital for treatment.
The following day, July 4th, Nieves succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, leaving an entire community saddened.

Nieves was raised by his grandparents, Sheryl Lake and Jim Tarantino in Carpinteria. He graduated from Carpinteria High School in 2023 and was attending Santa Barbara City College at the time of his death. His grandparents told reporters that he also worked at Laughing Buddha and Rori’s Artisanal Creamery. His family has created a GoFundMe page to create a scholarship in the victim’s name for Carpinteria High School seniors.
Officers are still trying to figure out what exactly happened on that stretch of highway in Montecito. Officers took statements at the scene and gathered evidence to try and determine what caused this accident and who was responsible.
