Placer County Crash On I-80 Leaves Two Injured; DUI Suspected

DUI driver suspected in head-on crash on Interstate 80 in Placer County.

Placer County, CA (August 8, 2024) Interstate 80 in Placer County began the scene of a car collision on Thursday morning, August 8th. The two-vehicle accident took place on Interstate 80 right around 4:30 a.m., not far from Nyack Road, officers reported. The accident left two people with injuries in the unincorporated Emigrant Gap area.

The sun had yet to rise as vehicles drove along Interstate 80 in Placer County at 4:30 on Thursday morning. A black Ford pickup truck and another vehicle were heading towards each other on the interstate, just southwest from Lake Spaulding. For reasons that remain unclear, the Ford pickup and the other vehicle collided, head-on, officers reported. The impact left both vehicles with busted windows and severely damaged bodies, sitting in the middle of the interstate, blocking the roadway. One of the victim’s had an iPhone that automatically called 911, alerting them to the accident as well as the location.

Authorities hurried to the scene and found the two badly damaged vehicles sitting in the middle of the interstate. Fluid from the vehicles was leaking all over the roadway. A thick field of debris and glass surrounded the two vehicles, reports indicated. Officers quickly made their way to the vehicles, checking to see if anyone had sustained injuries in the accident. They found two people with injuries and called for an ambulance.

Paramedics arrived and found one person with a broken arm along with another injuries. The second victim was found with injuries that were not disclosed, according to reports. Both victims were placed in ambulances and taken to a local hospital to receive treatment for injuries they had sustained. Officers investigated the scene before tow trucks removed the two damaged vehicles. Officers said they believe that one of the drivers was intoxicated at the time of the collision. Crews worked for hours cleaning up the glass and debris that was left behind.
