Bakersfield, CA (August 12, 2024) The community of Bakersfield is awakening to sad news this morning. A bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle at the intersection of South Tulare Street and East California Avenue. The Bakersfield Police Department stated that the fatal accident occurred just after 10:00 p.m.
A man was riding east on a bicycle on East California Avenue on Sunday night, August 11th, 2024. As he rode, a Honda was headed west on the same street, officers reported. Without warning, the bicyclist began making a northbound turn onto South Tulare Street. Witnesses told officers that the bike rode directly into the Honda’s path. The driver of the vehicle had no time to react as the bicycle slammed into the car.
Fire responders hurried to the 400 block of East California Avenue, just after 10:00 o’clock, and found the bicyclist on the ground. They hurried to give him medical attention, but sadly, the man was dead. Officers pronounced the victim dead at the scene and called for a coroner, according to reports. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Officers do not believe that speed or intoxication were factors in this fatal accident. They questioned the driver of the Honda and gathered evidence at the scene. The man’s bicycle was left in a dented and destroyed heap and had to be removed from the scene.
