La Mesa, CA (September 6, 2024) The community of La Mesa was left in shock as news spread of a 14-year-old boy being hit by a garbage truck. Caleb Carvalho, a Helix Charter High School Freshman, sustained life-threatening injuries in the collision. It all happened around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 5th, as the 14-year-old rode his bike to school.
As Carvalho rode his bicycle through La Mesa, on his way to school, he approached the intersection of La Mesa Boulevard and University Avenue. Officers reported that the 14-year-old was riding in the bike lane when a garbage truck began turning into a driveway and, apparently, did not see Carvalho. Reports indicated that the teen tried to get out of the trucks way to avoid being hit, but didn’t have enough time. The garage truck struck the boy, according to reports.

Emergency crews arrived and first saw the boy’s feet sticking out towards the street, the mangled bicycle on the ground near him. Officers said the garbage truck remained at the scene, its driver cooperative. Paramedics rushed to the boy’s side and quickly rushed him to a local hospital with a badly broken pelvis which was reportedly out of alignment. He remains in critical condition, according to reports.
Investigators have determined that intoxication was not a factor in this accident, however they continue to investigate in an attempt to uncover what actually happened. The bike was hauled from the scene in a twisted and smashed heap of wreckage, according to reports.
