Irvine, CA (September 20, 2024) Six firefighters sustained critical injuries in a single-vehicle collision in Irvine on Thursday night, September 19, 2024. The six were among eight firefighters on a transport vehicle that crashed on the Foothill (241) Toll Road, near Tomato Springs Road. It all happened just before 7:00 p.m. and left 6 firefighters with the Orange County Fire Authority in critical condition.
Eight firefighters were on an Orange County Fire Authority transport truck on Thursday evening, September 19th, 2024. For reasons that remain unknown, the truck crashed in the northbound lanes of the Foothill (241) Toll Road. OCFA Chief Brian Fennessy told News reporters that the firefighters were just getting off of a 12-hour shift when the accident occurred. When emergency crews arrived, they found six of the eight firefighters with serious injuries, reports indicated. Paramedics transported the six victims to different trauma centers and hospitals to receive treatment. The other two firefighters on the transport truck were also taken to a nearby hospital, but according to reports, their injuries are not serious.
Update (10/3): The identities of some of the firefighters have been made available. One is Andrew Brown, who sustained major injuries in the crash.
Following the initial investigation at the scene, officers reported that the transport truck swerved to avoid a ladder on the tolls road before slamming into the guardrail and overturning. Officers had to close all lanes of the Toll Road and issued a SigAlert, according to reports.
