Apple Valley, CA (June 11, 2024) An accident on Monday night, June 3, left a bicyclist with critical injuries. The bicyclist, 54-year-old Victor Cunanan, was struck by a vehicle at approximately 9:10 p.m. at the intersection of Wichita Road and Thunderbird Road in Apple Valley. Tragically, Cunanan passed away four days later, the San Bernardino County coroner reports.
A 36-year-old was driving a black Ford Explorer east in the no. 1 lane on Thunderbird Road. As the pickup approached Wichita Road, it came upon a bicyclist who was also heading east. For reasons still unknown, the Ford hit Victor Cunanan, knocking him from his bike. The bicycle was left with a bent well and smashed body. Several feet from the bike was Cunanan, motionless on the pavement. The driver of the Ford was not injured, according to reports.
Emergency crews hurried to the scene and found Cunanan on the ground. He had life-threatening injuries, and paramedics rushed him to a local hospital to receive emergency treatment. He was then airlifted to another hospital, officers said. After days of fighting for his life, Victor sadly passed away.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T) is leading the investigation into this accident. They closed westbound and eastbound lanes of Thunderbird Road between Wichita Road and Wanaque Road for four hours as they investigated the scene. Officers took statements from witnesses and looked for evidence at the scene in an effort to understand what really happened that morning in Apple Valley.
