The bicyclist was a39-year-old woman from Bakersfield. She was riding east, crossing South Union Avenue, northbound. At the same time, a woman in a 2010 Toyota Corolla was traveling in the number one lane, going north on South Union Avenue at Garden Drive. She was driving and estimated 45-50 mph. Then, for reasons unknown, the bicyclist crossed directly in front of the Corolla. The driver was unable to avoid the bike.

The front of the Corolla hit the bicyclist. The driver pulled over and stopped, following the collision. Emergency crews arrived at the scene but the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers determined that drugs and alcohol were not factors in this collision.
