SAN MATEO, CA (September 30, 2022) – A bicyclist was killed on Highway 1 by a wrong-way truck driver after the truck veered into oncoming traffic on Wednesday.
California Highway Patrol officers say that a commercial truck truck headed southbound on Highway 1 collided with a cyclist heading northbound, causing the cyclist to go off the road and into nearby trees.
The collision occurred around 11:30 a.m. near Cypress Avenue.
The truck driver, identified as Vincent D. Qualls, crossed the double-yellow lines on the road when he crashed his truck into the bicyclist for unknown reasons.
The cyclist, whose identity is still unknown, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Qualls was taken to Seton Medical Center in Daly City for treatment of minor injuries. Shortly after he was arrested for involuntary manslaughter with gross negligence.
It is still unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
