Merced, CA (July 31, 2024) Tragedy struck the community of Merced as news spread of a young bicyclist’s death. The juvenile was riding a bicycle when they were struck at the intersection of East 21st Street and Calimyrna Street, claiming the rider’s life. The California Highway Patrol said the accident occurred right around 9:00 p.m.
The sun was setting in Merced as a juvenile rode their bicycle along East 21st Street. As they neared the intersection of Calimyrna, a vehicle was also approaching the intersection. The vehicle struck the bicyclist, throwing the young rider several feet. The bicycle rolled for a while before falling over, now bent, in the roadway.
Emergency crews hurried to the scene, filling the night sky with sirens and flashing emergency lights. They arrived to find the young rider on the ground with life-threatening injuries. Paramedics did all they could to save the juvenile, but their injuries were too extensive. Sadly, the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers placed a tarp over the young rider’s body and called for a coroner to come to the scene.
As they waited, they gathered evidence and took a statement from the driver. They are working as hard as they can to decipher what happened at that Merced intersection that summer night. A nearby resident told the California Highway Patrol that the area was darker and the young bicyclist may have been difficult to see. Officers want to remind motorists to pay close attention, especially after dark, when operating a vehicle.
