Oakland, CA (March 10, 2025) An AC Transit Bus in Oakland was full of people heading to and from their destinations on Friday, March 8th. Chatting, reading books, listening to music or podcasts, they all settled in for a boring ride, just as they had done so many times before. This bus ride ended differently, though, when a speeding car slammed into the bus, injuring 16 people.
The bus was heading north on International Boulevard when it was hit, head-on, by a Chrysler 300 sedan. Officers at the scene reported that the Chrysler, which was speeding, slammed into a Toyota as it turned left onto 54th Avenue. Robert Lyles, a transit spokesperson, said that the Chrysler then went over the median and crashed into the bus at a high speed.
Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found the bus with major front-end damage. The Chrysler was completely totaled, according to images taken at the scene. So many people were injured that emergency crews had to stay focused and not get overwhelmed. They got to work determining the extent of everyone’s injuries. The drivers of the Toyota and Chrysler were both injured in the crash, officers said.
14 other people, mostly those on the bus, were also injured in this collision. Two of the injured were said to be in critical condition, officers reported. Officers said that this collision required a “massive emergency response” and several ambulances were needed to transport the victims to hospitals for treatment.
