3 Dead Following Fiery Wrong-Way Collision On Highway 101 In Humboldt County

Lisandro Santos killed by wrong-way DUI driver on Highway 99 in Tulare County

Humboldt, CA (January 26, 2024) Sadly, three people lost their lives in a fiery head-on collision in Humboldt County on Sunday night. The devastating crash occurred on Highway 101, not far from Metropolitan Road, according to authorities. The fatal accident on that dark highway has many wondering why it happened.

It was right around 10:43 p.m. on January 21st, when a 2015 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck headed the wrong way down US Highway 101. A 2010 Mercedes Benz C300 was driving south on the highway as the Toyota pickup approached. In the darkness of night, the driver of the Mercedes didn’t realize the Toyota was approaching until it was too late. The two vehicles collided, head-on, in the southbound lane.

Following the dramatic crash, the Mercedes became engulfed in flames. By the time emergency crews arrived at the scene, the two occupants of the vehicle had both passed away. Paramedics rushed to the Toyota pickup but found the driver also deceased. All three people were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol are leading the investigation into this fatal, head-on collision. They want to determine why the Toyota was driving the wrong-way on Highway 101 and figure out if drugs or alcohol were involved.

The loss of life is always heartbreaking. All of us at Accident News Now extend our deepest condolences to the families of the three people killed in this horrible accident.
