Concord, CA (April 8, 2024) Sadness covered the town of Concord following the news of a 9-year-old girl who was killed in a collision on Sunday morning, April 7th. Danna Hernandez-Tapia was an Oregon resident and the only occupant of the vehicle who did not survive. The fatal solo-vehicle accident took place at the northbound split of Highway 24 and Interstate 680 just after 5:00 a.m. The driver of the vehicle jumped out of the car and fled on foot, leaving behind five passengers.
A 30-year-old male was driving a gray Mazda CX-9 with five female passengers in the car with him. THey were headed north on Interstate 680 at the Highway 24 split when the Mazda went off the interstate and onto the dirt median, between the two freeways. The Mazda then rolled several times before coming to a stop on its roof. The driver of the vehicle opened the driver’s side door, climbed out of the car and fled on foot before police officers could arrive. He left the five passengers behind, according to officers.
The California Highway Patrol received the call about the accident at approximately 5:14 a.m. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found the Mazda with severe body damage, lying on its roof. They hurried to give medical aid to anyone in need and found 5 passengers in the car. A 9-year-old girl in the vehicle was unresponsive. She had been killed in the accident and, with heavy hearts, authorities pronounced her dead at the scene and waited for the coroner to arrive.
Paramedics also found four other females inside the vehicle. All four sustained serious injuries in the accident and were transported to John Muir Medical Center, located in Walnut Creek, to receive medical treatment. Police officers reported that several of the females weren’t wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
At 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, officers reported that they were actively searching for the 30-year-old male driver of the Mazda who fled the scene. Anyone with information regarding this fatal accident is encouraged to call the California Highway Patrol.
