Bakersfield, CA (May 13, 2024) A head-on collision on Highway 43 claimed two lives on Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The accident happened just after 3:30 a.m. under the darkness of the California moon. A 69-year-old woman and a man were both killed in this tragic, head-on collision, just north of Pond Road.
It was the middle of the night in Bakersfield. Traffic wasn’t heavy and vehicles followed the glow of their headlights along the road. This was no different on Highway 43, where a Dodge was heading south and a Honda was traveling north. The distance between the two vehicles grew smaller and smaller, their headlights becoming bigger and brighter as they approached. Suddenly, the Honda swerved into the southbound lane. The driver of the Dodge had no time to react and the two vehicles slammed into each other, head-on.
The California Highway Patrol, along with the Bakersfield Police Department, arrived at the scene and found the two vehicles with extremely bad front-end damage. Glass and pieces of debris were in every direction. Officers approached the vehicles to give aid to anyone in need. Sadly, they found that the driver of the Honda had been killed in the collision. One of the passengers in the Dodge also did not survive this traumatic accident. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports.
The driver of the Dodge as well as two of their passengers sustained injuries in this accident. Paramedics carefully placed all three on stretchers and loaded them into ambulances. With sires wailing and flashing lights igniting the darkness, they were rushed to a local hospital to receive treatment.
Police officers gathered evidence and are working to determine what caused the Honda to end up in oncoming traffic. They want to learn why this accident happened in the first place. Tow trucks had to come and remove both of the vehicles from the scene and crews cleaned up the massive amounts of debris and glass from the highway. Officers are also working to determine whether alcohol or drugs were factors in this deadly crash.
