Chula Vista, CA (August 16, 2024) A tragic accident occurred this morning in which at least one person was killed.
CHP reported that at about 6:48 a.m., a white Toyota Camry was on fire on the I-805. Witnesses stated that three men were in the Camry when for unknown reasons, the driver lost control. They veered into the right shoulder, went up an embankment, hit the concrete support of a freeway sign, landed back on the shoulder, and caught fire.
When authorities arrived, they found one man lying on the road away from the vehicle. He was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers later learned that just after the crash, three Good Samaritans worked together to try to push the vehicle out of the blocked lanes. It’s unclear if the deceased victim was ejected from the Camry in the crash, or if the Good Samaritans pulled him out.
The two other passengers were extricated from the car by Chula Vista firefighters and rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Update (8/19): The deceased victim has been identified as 23-year-old Matthew Bruke Mitiku, a passenger in the vehicle.
