Richmond, CA (September 3, 2024) A wrong-way crash on the 80 Freeway in Richmond left three people injured on August 30th, 2024. It was a Friday night, right around 10:00 p.m., when the two vehicles collided. It happened near El Portal Drive and ended with several vehicles engulfed in flames, according to reports.
It was a summer night in Richmond as vehicles traveled along the 80 Freeway. Suddenly, deputies with the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office noticed a stolen Hummer and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver wouldn’t stop and instead, sped away, trying to flee. The Hummer ended up on the 80 Freeway, heading the wrong-way, at a high rate of speed, reports indicated. The deputies stopped pursuing the Hummer, fearing the high speed chase would end in an accident.
The Hummer continued along the Freeway until it slammed into several other vehicles. One of the vehicles caught on fire and the flames spread to all of the vehicles within seconds, reports indicated. The 80 Freeway was blocked by the fiery collision, causing other traffic issues.

Emergency crews could see the flames in the distance as they hurried to the scene. They found several vehicles on fire and immediately began helping anyone in need. Paramedics transported 3 people, two adults and one child, to a local hospital with unknown injuries. The driver of the stolen Hummer was placed under arrest at the scene, officers reported.
