George Pitman Sustained Critical Injuries In Shandon Crash

One airlifted following collision with semi-truck in Apple Valley on SR-18.

Shandon, CA (December 4, 2023) 33-year-old George Pitman was critically injured on Friday, December 1st after colliding with a commercial truck tractor and trailer. Officials reported that the accident occurred on Highway 46 near a Shandon rest stop around 5:10 a.m.

Pitman was driving his 2018 Nissan NV2500 van east in the left lane of Highway 46. The California Highway Patrol said there was heavy fog with affected visibility on the roads. Suddenly, a commercial truck tractor pulling a trailer pulled out of the rest area and onto the highway directly in front of Pitman.

Officers said that Pitman wasn’t able to stop or avoid the truck and crashed into the left rear of the trailer, sending his Nissan van spinning. It finally came to a stop in the intersection and sustained severe damage, according to the California Highway Patrol. The front of the van was completely smashed and destroyed, the windshield busted and metal was bent like it was rubber.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found George Pitman trapped inside his van. Fire fighters hurried to extricate him and he was airlifted to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center for treatment of critical injuries. The California Highway Patrol stated that Pitman was admitted to the hospital with a broken femur and severe head trauma. At this time, he remains in critical condition.

The Nissan van that Pitman was driving had to be towed from the scene and crews had to clean up glass and debris from the roadway. The driver of the truck and trailer that was involved in this crash, continued driving west following the collision, authorities said. The truck and trailer should both have major damage on their left side, according to the California Highway Patrol.
