Lakeland Village, CA (August 6, 2024) A motorist was killed Monday, August 5 when their SUV slammed into a tree and caught fire.
The collision was reported around 3:23 p.m. in the 16200 block of Grand Avenue in Lakeland Village, which is near the entrance to the Ortega (74) Highway.
CHP reported that the driver lost control and plowed into the tree, which was located in the front yard of a home. A fire then engulfed the SUV.
The residents of the property tried to help using a fire extinguisher, but it did not work. Riverside County Fire Department firefighters were able to put out the fire by 3:50 p.m. The motorist was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Update: The victim has been identified as Darryl Oldfield, 75.
