Following an investigation at the scene, the California Highway Patrol stated that it started when a Ford pickup tried to cross the highway from Wilbur Road. As the driver of the Ford began to cross, a Chevrolet pickup was heading right towards him from the east. The driver of the Ford did not see the Chevy, reports indicated, and the two pickups collided. Officers said that the Chevrolet pickup broadsided the Ford in the middle of Highway 162.
Paramedics reported that the driver of the Chevrolet pickup, identified as Timothy McCaskill, sustained serious injuries in this crash and was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center via ambulance. He was then transported to US Davis Medical Center by helicopter to receive treatment for their injuries. As of this morning, authorities reported that he is still in the hospital.
Police officers do not believe that alcohol or drugs were factors in this accident. The highway was littered with debris and glass and had to be cleaned up by crews. Tow trucks were also called to remove at least one of the vehicles from the highway.
