Michael Winter, 25, killed in motorcycle accident in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, CA (July 8, 2022) – Michael Winter, a 25-year-old motorcyclist from Redlands, was fatally injured when he collided with a sports sedan that turned in front of him at a Riverside intersection, authorities said today.

Winter died about 8:10 p.m. Thursday in the crash at Streeter Avenue and Jerry Louder Drive, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Sgt. Andrew Leyva said that Winter was riding his Suzuki northbound on Streeter at an undetermined speed when he reached the intersection at the same time that a 32-year-old motorist in a Dodge Charger arrived from the opposite direction and initiated a left turn onto Jerry Louder.

“As both vehicles entered the intersection, they collided,” Leyva said.

He said Michael Winter was ejected onto the roadway, suffering catastrophic injuries. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics a few minutes later.

The Dodge driver, whose identity was not disclosed, was not hurt, nor was the motorist’s passenger.

Both were interviewed by investigators. No one was arrested.

“At this time, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs may have been contributing factors,” the sergeant said.

He said the investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information was asked to contact the police Traffic Bureau at 951-826-8724.

Liability In Riverside Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists have  a naturally small profile and are more likely to be overlooked by other drivers. Many collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous lane changes. According to California Vehicle Code 22107, “No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after the giving of an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this chapter in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a motorcycle accident including:

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Driver distraction
  • Inclement weather

The family of any victim that died in a motorcycle accident may be able to seek aid through a wrongful death claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. There are, however, statute of limitations associated with civil claims. Failing to act within the statute of limitations may result in a permanent forfeiture of your rights.
