One Killed, One Seriously Injured In La Mesa Collision

2 injured in 2-pickup collision in Reseda.

La Mesa, CA (May 21, 2024) A chaotic series of events on Saturday night claimed one person’s life and left another one with serious injuries. It all started with a head-on collision on Interstate 8 and ended with one of the drivers getting out of the vehicle, only to be struck and killed by a pickup truck. The fatal accident took place near 70th Street just after 11:30 p.m.

As midnight approached, vehicles headed to and from destinations on Interstate 8 in La Mesa. Not far from San Diego State University, a 2009 Toyota Tundra was traveling west in the eastbound lanes, for reasons unknown. At the same time, a 1996 Honda Civic was driving east on I-8, when the driver suddenly saw headlights directly in front of him. He had no time to react and the two vehicles collided, head-on.

Moments after the accident, the driver of the Tundra, got out of his wrecked vehicles and climbed over the center divider wall and attempted to cross the westbound lanes of traffic. Suddenly, as he darted across the lanes, he was hit by a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The 24-year-old was thrown across several lanes on the interstate before he finally landed, hard, on the pavement.

The night sky was lit up by flashing emergency lights and sirens wailed through the darkness as emergency personnel made their way to to the scene. Paramedics rushed to the pedestrian’s side, ready to give life-saving measures, but they were too late. With heavy hearts, they pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The driver of the Honda, a 33-year-old Montebello man, sustained serious injuries in the accident. Paramedics loaded the man on a stretcher and placed him carefully in an ambulance. He was rushed to Sharp Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators are working diligently to determine what caused this horrible accident, as well as why the driver of the truck tried to flee the scene. The Honda and the Tundra, both mangled and smashed, had to be hauled from the scene by tow trucks. Glass and debris had to be cleaned from the scene as well before motorists could resume driving.
