Oakland, CA (May 14, 2024) A community is mourning the sudden loss of a politician and her wife following a fatal collision in Oakland on Friday. Peggy Moore and her wife, Hope Wood, were both killed, along with two others, in the State Route 76 collision. It happened right at 11:30 p.m. on May 10th. The loss of the two politicians has left an ache not only in the local political community but also in the entire city of Oakland.
Moore and Wood were heading west on State Route 76 in a Jeep Gladiator on Friday night. As they drove, with only the headlights illuminating the road in front of them, another vehicle was coming from the other direction. A silver Chrysler 300 suddenly drifted from the eastbound lane into the westbound lane, directly in front of the Jeep. The two vehicles crashed, head-on, into each other, reports indicated. The collision happened as a Toyota Camry was also heading west. The force from the crash caused the Toyota to hit the side of the Jeep. The Jeep caught on fire, officers said, and the flames quickly spread.

The sky lit up with flashing lights as emergency vehicles rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the three vehicles damaged and in the middle of the highway. The Jeep had caught on fire and the flames were quickly spreading. Firefighters wasted no time putting out the fire, reports indicated. They quickly began checking to see if anyone needed medical assistance. They found both Moore and Wood, as well as another adult passenger, in the Jeep, unresponsive. Unfortunately, all three were pronounced dead at the scene. Officers also found the driver of the Chrysler dead, following this collision. They were also pronounced dead at the scene. It seems the occupants of the Toyota were the only ones to walk away from this horrible accident.
Detectives worked to gather as much evidence as they could find and took a statement from the driver of the Toyota. They hope to discover why the Chrysler drifted into oncoming traffic that night in Oakland. This traumatic and devastating accident has left a community mourning.
Those closest to Moore and Wood held a vigil at Lake Merritt, where the couple was married. Oakland Representative Barbara Lee posted on X that she was heartbroken following this loss. She went on to say that Peggy Moore was, “a friend, activist and one of the best organizers I know. Her passion and fight for justice and equality is what brought her and Hope together.”
