Willows, CA (October 2, 2023) A semi-truck carrying bananas collided with an omnibus on northbound Interstate 5 on September 29th, 2023. California Highway Patrol officers said the bus was carrying a mariachi band and it had bunk beds for the occupants.
The collision occurred around 11:30 p.m. when a 40-year-old man was driving a 1999 Sultana Omnibus north on I-5. At the same time, a 60-year-old man was driving a 2019 Kenworth truck north on I-5. The semi-truck was overtaking the bus near County Road 39 and, for reasons unknown, the right front of the semi struck the left rear of the bus, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The semi ended up in some shrubs while the Omnibus went off the road and crashed into a fence before overturning and landing on its side. There were 19 passengers on the bus during the collision, 8 of them were taken to a local hospital with injuries.
The Semi was hauling 40,000 pounds of bananas and the roadway was littered with debris following the collision. Authorities do not suspect drugs and alcohol in this crash.
