South Los Angeles, CA (April 12, 2024) 22-year-old Maria Jarmaillo-Silva lost her life on Thursday night, April 11th, in a suspected hit-and-run collision on South Figueroa Street in South L.A. The fatal accident took place in the Vermont Square neighborhood right around 9:30 p.m. Two people, including a 5-year-old boy, were rushed to the hospital following this two-vehicle crash.

A black sedan and a white SUV were involved in the collision which occurred in the 5200 block of South Figueroa Street, not far from 58th Street. Officers aren’t certain what caused this deadly crash, but it appears that the black sedan was hit by the white SUV.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene on Thursday night and found the two vehicles blocking part of the roadway. A white SUV had front-end damage and a black sedan beside it with the driver’s side completely smashed. Firefighters with the Los Angeles Fire Department found two people trapped inside one of the vehicles. They had to use specialized rescue tools to extricate the victims.

Sadly, one person was killed in the collision, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene and officers covered the body and waited for the coroner to arrive. Two other people, a man said to be in his 20s and a 5-year-old boy, were both injured in this crash. Paramedics rushed them both to a local hospital, via ambulance, where the man is in critical condition and the boy is in moderate condition.

Officers reported that witnesses saw one person running from the scene on foot, following this tragic collision. A large crowd gathered as crews worked the scene, officers said. They spoke to witnesses and gathered evidence to help them better understand what caused this fatal accident. Tow trucks were called to remove the vehicles from the scene and crews cleaned up large pieces of debris from the roadway.
