Rialto, CA (July 31, 2024) Sadness covered the community of Rialto as residents awoke to news of a deadly accident on Sunday morning, July 28th. 57-year-old Maria C. Ortiz, 19-year-old Jacqueline A. Banuelos-Ortiz and 18-year-old Steven Banuelos-Ortiz all lost their lives in the accident. It happened just after 2:30 a.m. on the 210 Freeway, not far from North Pepper Avenue, according to reports.

Darkness covered the roadways in Rialto at 2:30 in the morning on Sunday, July 28th. A vehicle traveled along the westbound 210 Freeway in the far right lane. Suddenly, the vehicle swerved into the far left lane before the driver over-corrected, forcing the vehicle back to the right and losing control. Witnesses told police officers that the vehicle then left the road at a fairly high rate of speed and began to roll. All three occupants were thrown from the vehicle, officers reported. As if that wasn’t enough, the vehicle then burst into flames.

The California Highway Patrol hurried to the scene and could see the car on fire in the distance as they approached the scene. Firefighters worked quickly to put out the flames. Officers Ivan Sandoval, a spokesperson for the CHP reported that they found all three victims deceased at the scene. The coroner identified the three victims as Maria C. Ortiz, Jacqueline A. Banuelos-Ortiz and Steven Banuelos-Ortiz, all from Victorville.

The charred and destroyed vehicle had to be hauled away from the scene and officers continue to work to try and figure out what exactly caused the vehicle to veer off the roadway, causing the collision. At this time, officers said they do not know who was driving the vehicle at the time of the collision. This investigation is ongoing.
