Las Vegas, NV (August 5, 2024) Sadness swept through North Las Vegas following a Saturday afternoon collision that claimed the life of a child. 9-year-old Porterville resident, Sophia Sandoval, was a passenger in the vehicle with a DUI driver, officers reported. Their Corvette collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Ann Road and Simmons Street around 4:00 p.m., leading to the child’s death and the driver’s arrest.
63-year-old Christina Sorensen was driving a Chevrolet Corvette through North Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon. A 9-year-old girl was riding in the passenger seat of the Corvette. At the intersection of Ann Road and Simmons Street, Sorensen attempted a left turn on a red light. The Corvette entered the intersection at the same time as a Jeep SUV, driven by a man in his 50s. The two vehicles collided, the Jeep slamming into the passenger side of the Corvette, officers reported. The force sent the Jeep rolling onto its side and left glass and debris all over the intersection.
Police officers arrived at the scene to find several good Samaritans around Sandoval, trying to save her life. Police officers took over until The North Las Vegas Fire Department arrived at the scene. They quickly rushed the child to UMC Pediatrics Hospital. The medical team did everything they could to save the girl, but her injuries were too extensive. Sadly, Sophia Sandoval succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The man driving the Jeep was found with serious injuries following the accident. He was loaded into an ambulance and taken to UMC Trauma Hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. Officers reported that the man’s injuries were not life-threatening and they expect him to make a full recovery.
The driver of the Corvette, 63-year-old Sorensen, failed a sobriety test and was arrested at the scene for multiple charges. She was booked into the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center and faces charges of DUI resulting in death, child endangerment resulting in death and reckless driving resulting in death.
