Antoinette Finau Killed By Drunk Driver In San Leandro

Bicyclist struck and killed by DUI driver in Antioch.

San Leandro, CA (May 7, 2024) The community of San Leandro is saddened following a senseless accident that claimed a woman’s life on May 5th. Antoinette Finau was headed to work, late Sunday night, where she serves as an emergency services dispatcher, when she was senselessly hit by a drunk driver. Sadly, Finau sustained life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital. The DUI driver was arrested, reports indicated.

Antoinette Finau was an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Dispatcher and was driving to work on Sunday night, May 5th. At approximately 11:14 p.m., Finau entered the intersection of 150th Avenue and E. 14th Street and was broadsided by a drunk driver. The force from the collision caused Finau’s vehicle to violently roll, before finally coming to a stop.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found Finau’s vehicle smashed from the accident. Paramedics rushed to her car where they found Finau clinging to life. She was carefully placed on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance which transported her to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The medical staff did everything within their power to try and save her, but unfortunately her injuries were too extensive. With heavy hearts, they pronounced Antoinette Finau dead at the hospital.

The driver of the at fault vehicle failed the breathalyzer test and was arrested for DUI. She was taken to jail and is facing several charges, according to the San Leandro Police Department. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, where Finau worked, wrote “She died a senseless and tragic death at the hands of a drunk driver,” on their Facebook page following this traumatic collision.

A community of law enforcement agencies came together on Monday, along with Finau’s family, to remember the woman they all knew and loved. This horrific accident serves as a reminder of just how fragile life can be and how we, as drivers, need to follow the laws set in place to keep us safe.
