Las Vegas, NV (June 1, 2024) Lt. Jonathan Rivera, a corrections officer with the Nevada Department of Corrections, was heading to work on Friday, May 31st, when he was hit by a DUI driver. The wrong-way collision occurred on U.S. 95 mere minutes before 5:00 a.m., just north of Las Vegas. The accident left Rivera with critical injuries.
Rivera was heading to work on Highway 95 in the darkness of early morning on May 31st. He suddenly noticed headlights heading straight for him, but he didn’t have enough time to react. The vehicle struck Rivera head-on and the impact caused both vehicles to rollover. The collision left Rivera trapped inside his vehicle with critical injuries.
Emergency crews responded quickly and found the two vehicles on US-95 between Kyle Road and Lee Canyon Road with extensive damage. Firefighters rushed to Rivera’s vehicle and found him trapped inside. They used the jaws of life to cut him free of the vehicle and carefully removed him. He was placed on a stretcher while paramedics evaluated him. They called for a medical helicopter to take him to University Medical Center where he had emergency surgery, according to reports.

The responsible driver was suspected of driving while intoxicated as well as driving in the wrong lane in the wrong direction, officers said. At this time, it is unknown, if the at fault driver was injured or arrested. None of this information has been disclosed.
Investigators worked the scene and tow trucks were called to remove the wrecked vehicles from the area, reports indicated. Crews worked as fast as they could to remove debris and glass from the scene following this collision. The president of the Fraternal Order of Police Nevada Department of Corrections, Paul Lunkwitz, told reporters that the stretch of highway where the accident occurred is a deadly and long stretch of road.
