Santa Ana, CA (April 22, 2024) A driver with prior DUI arrests crashed his vehicle while drunk, killing one of his passengers. Jocelyn Janet Campos, 27, from Paramount, was tragically killed. The deadly accident happened just after 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 21st, in Santa Ana. It happened on Main Street when the drunk driver slammed into a Palm tree and then a pole, according to reports.
Officers with the Santa Ana Police Department said they received several calls from people reporting a crash in the 800 block of South Main Street. The calls started coming in around 2:08 a.m. on Sunday morning, officers said.
A pickup truck was heading south on Main Street when the driver lost control and slammed into a Palm tree. The vehicle then hit a pole and came to a stop. The Santa Ana Police Department arrived with the Orange County Fire Authority and found the damaged vehicle sitting against a pole. Officers found three people inside the pickup truck, two men and one woman. Officers said one of the men was behind the wheel and the other man was sitting in the back seat. The woman, identified as Campos, was sitting in the front passenger seat and both the woman and the driver were trapped, according to reports.
The Orange County Fire Authority had to use specialized tools to remove the driver and Campos from the damaged vehicle. All three occupants of the pickup were injured and taken to a local hospital to receive treatment. Campos had life-threatening injuries, officers reported. The emergency medical team at the hospital did everything they could, but she succumbed to her injuries. Sadly, Jocelyn Janet Campos was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Santa Ana Police Department said that the two men were in stable condition and were expected to make a full recovery.
The driver, however, exhibited signs of intoxication following the collision. Officers also learned he had prior DUI arrests. They arrested him and he faces charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence as well as DUI causing death.
