Garden Grove, CA (July 8, 2024) A horrific accident involving a family of five occurred on Sunday evening. It happened at about 7:35 p.m. near Twin Tree Lane. A man, 27, and a woman, 25, were riding on electric bikes with their three children in tow in bike trailers. Suddenly, they were struck by a black 2003 Toyota Camry. The driver fled the scene, but a witness pursued them in their vehicle.
The witness told police where the Camry went, and officers were able to detain the driver about 1.2 miles from the scene of the hit-and-run.
The mother, Angela Hernandez Mejia, and one of the children, an infant, were thankfully in stable condition when they arrived at the hospital. Hernandez Mejia was released and has been traveling between different hospitals to be with each of her family members: the father, Angel Ramirez, their five-year-old boy, Jacob, and their seven-year-old girl.
Update: The five-year-old boy, Jacob, was tragically declared brain dead as of Friday, July 12. Angela Hernandez Mejia pleaded with doctors to spend as much time with her son as she possibly can before she has to say goodbye.
Angel Ramirez is still in the hospital. The seven-year-old girl is doing better and breathing on ventilation, according to an update posted on a GoFundMe for the family.
Officers report that the Santa Ana resident who hit the family was arrested for hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury, failing to stop at a hit-and-run accident with injury, and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.
