Mother Killed, 8-Year-Old Injured In South L.A. DUI Crash

Pedestrian critically injured, driver arrested in DUI crash in Upland.

Los Angeles, CA (November 23, 2023) A mother was killed and her 8-year-old child was critically injured in a DUI collision in south Los Angeles on Thanksgiving Day. The Los Angeles Police Department said the accident occurred on the 1700 block of W. 83rd Street at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The woman and her 8-year-old son were sitting on a bench at a bus stop, waiting for the next bus to arrive. A driver left a nearby liquor store parking lot and crashed into another vehicle that was heading south on Western Avenue. The force of the collision sent one of the vehicles swerving towards the bus stop bench, where the woman and her child sat.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department rushed the mother, child and driver who caused the collision to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Sadly, the mother passed away at the hospital. The 8-year-old boy remains in critical condition, according to emergency personnel.

The Los Angeles Police Department stated that the driver who caused the accident was suspected of driving while under the influence and was arrested.

Crews had to clean the crash site of debris and the bus stop was also damaged in this fatal collision.
