Corona, CA (May 1, 2024) A devastating accident caused by a DUI driver left the community of Corona in shock on Thursday, April 29th. One person’s decision to drive while intoxicated not only cost another driver their life, but did so in a horrific and traumatic way, according to reports. It all happened around 12:30 a.m. near the Interstate 15 interchange on the westbound 91 Freeway. The DUI driver, 24-year-old Santa Ana resident, Christopher Magallon was arrested at the scene, officers said.
Magallon was behind the wheel of a Lincoln Mark LT, driving fairly fast, along the 91 Freeway. As he approached the I-15 interchange, he began to drift to the right, where a Toyota 4Runner was driving. The Lincoln slammed into the left side of the Toyota at a high speed. The force from the impact pushed the Toyota over, causing it to roll. The Toyota then burst into flames as the driver was trapped inside. Meanwhile. Magallon was sitting in his vehicle, seemingly confused, as his Lincoln sat in the center divider, immobilized.
Sirens from the Corona Fire Department fire trucks wailed through the community as it rushed to the accident. Firefighters rushed to the Toyota as flames reached towards the dark sky; the vehicle fully engulfed. Within minutes, they had the fire extinguished and hurried to see if anyone had survived. Sadly, they found the driver of the Toyota, listed as the only occupant, deceased. Sadly, they pronounced the driver of the Toyota dead at the scene and waited for the coroner.
Officers then headed toward the Lincoln in the middle of the median. Magallon was sitting behind the wheel of his pickup truck and seemed to have no idea what had happened. It was obvious to emergency personnel at the scene that Magallon was drunk. California Highway Patrol officers asked him to step out of the vehicle and they quickly arrested him, right there in the middle of the median on the 91 Freeway. He was booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside and faces charges of DUI causing great bodily injury, DUI resulting in property damage and DUI gross vehicular manslaughter. A $75,000 bond has been set for him, reports indicated.
