Las Vegas, NV (April 29, 2024) A senseless accident occurred in Las Vegas on Sunday night, claiming a 78-year-old’s life. 23-year-old Juan De Leon was arrested for DUI following the fatal accident. It all happened just after 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Peacock Avenue and Buffalo Drive. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that this death is the 57th death in Las Vegas Valley this year.
Initial reports indicated that De Leon was speeding in a Honda Accord. He was driving south on Buffalo Drive and lost control on a curve in the road at Peacock Avenue. He ended up crossing into oncoming traffic just as another vehicle approached. The Hyundai Sonata, driven by a 78-year-old man, had no time to react as De Leon’s Honda hit him, head-on.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to the collision and found both drivers injured. Paramedics at the scene transported both drivers to University Medical Center. The medical staff did everything they could, but the 78-year-old driver succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. De Leon, however, remains in the hospital but has been arrested for DUI and reckless driving resulting in death.
Officers had to close the northbound lanes of Buffalo Drive for nearly eight hours as they investigated this horrible accident. Tow trucks had to remove both vehicles from the scene and crews spent hours cleaning up the debris and glass that was left behind.
