Darrell Wayne Smith Indicted for Sexual Abuse Of Inmates

Dublin, CA (July 26, 2024) An emerging story out of a now-shuttered federal woman’s prison in Dublin, CA is turning heads. On Thursday, July 25, a federal grand jury indicted a guard from the prison, Darrell Wayne Smith, 55, with 15 counts of sexual abuse against five women who had been incarcerated.

Smith had previously been indicted for sexually abusing three female inmates. The prosecutors say this abuse took place from 2016-2021.

“As alleged, Officer Daryl Smith engaged in appalling criminal acts when he sexually abused those in his care and custody,” U.S. Deputy Atty. Gen. Lisa Monaco said in a statement. “This superseding indictment is the latest product of the department’s ongoing work to seek justice for victims of sexual assault at FCI Dublin.”

The abuse was so prevalent that the prison had been dubbed “the rape club.” Smith has been charged with violently abusing inmates in their cells and a laundry facility, which apparently led to his victims dubbing him “Dirty Dick.”

Smith is one of eight employees from the prison who has been charged with sexually abusing the inmates.
