MURRIETA, CA (October 21, 2022) – A 23-year-old motorcyclist was killed in Murrieta and another motorist seriously injured in a collision triggered when a vehicle pulled in front of the rider on a Murrieta street, authorities said today.

Mason Penticoff of Murrieta was fatally injured in the crash about 6:10 a.m. Thursday on Jefferson Avenue, just south of Guava Street, according to the Murrieta Police Department.

The agency said Penticoff was headed southbound on Jefferson in the No. 1 lane when the driver of a minivan pulled out of his driveway onto Jefferson, intending to make a left turn northbound.

Penticoff had no time to stop and slammed into the driver’s side of the minivan, according to police.

The victim was ejected from his motorcycle and onto the street, suffering catastrophic injuries.

The minivan driver, whose identity was not disclosed, suffered major injuries but managed to pull to the curb after the collision, police said.

Murrieta Fire & Rescue personnel arrived minutes later and pronounced Penticoff dead at the scene.

The minivan driver was taken to a regional trauma center for treatment and was expected to recover.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the police Traffic Bureau at 951-461-6397.

Liability In Murrieta Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists have a naturally small profile and are more likely to be overlooked by other drivers. Many collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous lane changes. According to California Vehicle Code 22107, “No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after the giving of an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this chapter in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a motorcycle accident including:

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Driver distraction
  • Inclement weather

The family of any victim that died in a motorcycle accident may be able to seek aid through a wrongful death claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. There are, however, statute of limitations associated with civil claims. Failing to act within the statute of limitations may result in a permanent forfeiture of your rights.
