A man, said to be in his late 50s, was riding a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle down a private driveway when he started to enter the road and was hit by a 1992 BMW that was speeding. A police statement said the crash forced the motorcycle to keep moving until it crashed with another vehicle. The BMW also kept moving until it, too, crashed into another vehicle. The driver of the BMW then opened his door and fled on foot, leaving a passenger in his car.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found the motorcyclist on the road, unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said his name is being withheld until his relatives are notified.

The driver of the BMW, Sandro Edgardo Mendieta was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder. He is being held on a $2 million bail, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Upon further investigation, authorities discovered that Medieta was attempting to leave the county to avoid arrest. Authorities actually found him at the Mexican border.

Liability In North Hills Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists have a naturally small profile and are more likely to be overlooked by other drivers. Many collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous lane changes. According to California Vehicle Code 22107, “No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after the giving of an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this chapter in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a motorcycle accident including:

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Driver distraction
  • Inclement weather

The family of any victim that died in a motorcycle accident may be able to seek aid through a wrongful death claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. There are, however, statute of limitations associated with civil claims. Failing to act within the statute of limitations may result in a permanent forfeiture of your rights.
