Motorcyclist Struck & Killed During Houston Police Chase

One killed in Lancaster collision.

Houston, TX (November 27, 2023) A 19-year-old motorcyclist was tragically killed when he was struck by a car that was running from the police. It happened around 2:15 a.m. on Monday morning, just off the FM 1960 exit ramp in Houston.

It all started around 2:08 a.m. when police officers noticed two cars racing on northbound Interstate 45 and Gulf Bank. When officers tried to stop them, one of the drivers refused and began speeding away. Police officers reported that the driver was exceeding 100 miles per hour.

The driver sped down the Interstate for nearly 6 minutes, before exiting the FM 1960 Freeway. The can then ran a red light and crashed into a motorcycle at a high speed. The motorcycle was being ridden by a 19-year-old, according to authorities.

Paramedics rushed to the motorcyclist’s side while officers continued the pursuit. Sadly, the young man was killed in the collision. Authorities had to call a tow truck to remove his damaged motorcycle from the scene.

The driver of the vehicle still refused to stop. They continued for another half a mile before the car became disabled and they couldn’t go any farther. Police officers reported that the suspect then jumped out of the vehicle and ran in an attempt to get away on foot. Officers were able to catch him and arrested him on the spot. The Houston Police Department said the suspect faces several felony murder charges.

Upon further investigation, officers discovered that the suspect’s vehicle had been stolen on Sunday, November 26th.

Liability In Houston Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists have a naturally small profile and are more likely to be overlooked by other drivers. Many collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous lane changes. According to Texas Vehicle Code 5450605, “No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after the giving of an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this chapter in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a motorcycle accident including:

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Driver distraction
  • Inclement weather

The family of any victim that died in a motorcycle accident may be able to seek aid through a wrongful death claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. There are, however, statute of limitations associated with civil claims. Failing to act within the statute of limitations may result in a permanent forfeiture of your rights.
