Teen Motorcyclist Killed In Cherry Valley Collision

Motorcyclist killed and 2 others injured in Fresno County crash

Cherry Valley, CA (September 7, 2023) A 17-year-old motorcyclist was killed on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, after colliding with a car. California Highway Patrol Officer Jason Montez told City News Service that the teen was riding a 2007 Kawasaki Ninja at the time of the collision.

Authorities reported that the motorcyclist was driving around stopped traffic on Cherry Valley Boulevard at Hannon Road. According to the California Highway Patrol he was driving at an unknown speed when he came upon the stopped traffic ahead of him.

At the same time, a 54-year-old Thermal woman was driving a 2014 Nissan Sentra east on Cherry Valley. She turned left onto northbound Hannon, which, Montez said is basically an extended driveway for residents.

A California Highway Patrol spokesperson told City News Service that it was unclear whether the teen noticed the Nissan, left turn signal on, as he attempted to go around stopped traffic. Montez said that the motorcycle went to the left to pass and collided with the Nissan. The force of the impact threw the teen from the motorcycle. The collision occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m.

The motorcyclist was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center in critical condition. The teen died from injuries sustained in the collision shortly after arriving at the hospital. Neither the driver of the Nissan, nor the 41-year-old female passenger from Mecca, were injured.

Liability In Cherry Valley Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists have a naturally small profile and are more likely to be overlooked by other drivers. Many collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous lane changes. According to California Vehicle Code 22107, “No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after the giving of an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this chapter in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a motorcycle accident including:

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Driver distraction
  • Inclement weather

The family of any victim that died in a motorcycle accident may be able to seek aid through a wrongful death claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. There are, however, statute of limitations associated with civil claims. Failing to act within the statute of limitations may result in a permanent forfeiture of your rights.
