Madera, CA (September 19, 2023) A boy was hit by a car on Tuesday morning while he was crossing the street in a crosswalk in front of a school. The California Highway Patrol said it happened around 7:20 a.m.
It began on Tuesday morning in front of Ezequiel Tafoya Alvarado Academy on Ellis Street, west of Owens Street. According to police officers, an 8-year-old boy and a sibling were in a crosswalk with other students and a crossing guard at the time of the accident. Witnesses said the crossing guard was wearing an orange, reflective vest and holding up a stop sign. They said he was even waving his arms in an attempt to stop the driver.

A 2012 Honda Civic, driven by a 25-year-old man, did not see the crossing guard or the children in the crosswalk. He hit the boy, sending him off the roadway and into a gravel area on the side of the road. Emergency crews were called and the boy was transported via ambulance to Valley Children’s Hospital with major injuries.
The California Highway Patrol doesn’t think drugs or alcohol were a factor in this accident. It is still under investigation, though.
