Fernando Benitez Espinosa, 84, struck and killed in Bakersfield.

Bakersfield, CA (October 24, 2024) The community of Bakersfield was shocked to learn of an 84-year-old pedestrian’s death on October 16th. Bakersfield resident, Fernando Benitez Espinosa, was struck by a vehicle while walking along Potomac Avenue at the intersection of South King Street. It happened around 7:30 p.m., according to reports.

It was just before 7:30 in the evening as 84-year-old Espinosa walked along Potomac Avenue. As he walked, a green pickup truck approached him from the north on South King Street. The elderly pedestrian began crossing the street outside of a designated crosswalk, officers reported. The driver of the pickup truck had no time to stop or avoid Espinosa and ended up hitting him. The force knocked him to the ground and the driver immediately slammed on the brakes and remained at the scene.

The Bakersfield Police Department arrived at the scene and found Espinosa on the ground with life-threatening injuries in the 400 block of South King Street. Officers were ready to begin life-saving measures, but he quickly succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck was respectful and cooperative during the investigation at the scene, according to reports. Officers continue to work to determine what happened to cause this fatal accident in Kern County.
