Fresno, CA (January 11, 2024) Fernando Gutierrez, a 71-year-old Fresno resident, was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking in Fresno. According to the Fresno Police Department, the accident occurred minutes before 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 5th.
The fatal hit-and-run collision happened on Shields Avenue, between Wilson Avenue and Palm Avenue. Police officers said Gutierrez was attempting to cross Shields Avenue when a car, heading west, hit him. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving Gutierrez lying on the roadway with life-threatening injuries.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and rushed Gutierrez to Community Regional Medical Center to receive treatment for his injuries. Medical personnel did everything they could, but Gutierrez, unfortunately, passed away on January 6th.
The driver of the vehicle that hit Gutierrez was last seen on Wilson Avenue, heading north, authorities said. The Collision Reconstruction and Hit & Run Detectives were at the scene gathering evidence following this hit-and-run collision. Following their investigation at the scene, they determined that the vehicle in question was a 2-door car. According to authorities, the vehicle they’re looking for could have damage to the windshield and possibly the front end. Detectives are determined to keep searching until the suspect, who left Gutierrez alone in the middle of the street, is captured.
